03:15 pm - Anthrocon 2007 Day 1: Thursday
All right, so it was my first furry convention ever. I don't know where to start!
I traveled with ![[info]](http://l-stat.livejournal.com/img/userinfo.gif) kiyopi, kaanah, and diermoo to Pittsburgh. Our flight was a little wonky. From Austin to Minneapolis then to Minneapolis to Pittsburgh. Long story short, half a day was spent in the air or waiting for the two hour layover. Before we arrived, there were people protesting the furry convention out in the rain. Going out of your way just to hate other people.. it's something I'll never understand.
The first night or so was pretty rough. I couldn't describe it better than Raeth(sp?), "It's like a punch in the gut. So now you know how to take it next time." Welcome to AC! *BAM* Overwhelming would be an understatement. You guys know how freaked out I get in social situations. It was like going to wing night for the first time all over again, except there was more than 2800 people there.
I met raganzi for a brief moment as we were checking in. Wasn't sure if he was the right person when I spotted em, so I called and sure enough, the guy I was spying reached for his phone. When I meet people, I tend to get a little flustered... maybe even a little red. It takes awhile for me to warm up to people. I couldn't help feeling I was intruding. Probably my imagination. So I let 'em go and wandered off. Maybe it was the sunglasses.
So after I registered and dropped off my crap in the room, I went down to the 3rd floor and sat in the hallway just to people watch. It kiiiiinda seemed like I kept seeing the same people pass, but just slight variations of each other. And then I see faeros waltzin by. Truly one of a kind in this fandom. Eventually I met up with Keet the collie. We've been corresponding off 'n on for two and a half years now? We wondered over to the convention center with his friend Kargo. We talked (more like they talked and I listened) as we went up the Wonkavator to the roof and just hung out.
Eventually I ended up by myself again, so I went back to people watching. At one point I was hit by a wave of anxiety. Headed up to the room and just relaxed for a bit. Then more people watching. I think the majority of the con I was wondering around by myself. At first it was uncomfortable, but as the con went on I didn't mind so much. Yeah, yeah I need to meet more people etcetera etcetera. Saw silver_mchowl randomly a few times. Went to the subshop with Kiyo sometime in there.. somewhere.
Three more days to go!

I'm one of a kind? :O
At first it was uncomfortable, but as the con went on I didn't mind so much.
This was how I felt in New York and at the Airport on the way there. Meeting a bunch of people I'd never met face to face before, and even worse doing it alone. But it was fun. Completely different experience. |
